The main application windows in Family Historian are called 'workspace' windows. There are 9 of them:
| The Focus Window | The 'hub' window of the appplication. Shows relationship information for a chosen 'focus person'. |
|---|---|
| The Records Window | View and search all the records in your file - not just for Individuals, but also Families, Sources, Repositories, Media, Notes, Research Notes, and more. |
| The Diagram Window | Diagrams are displayed in the Diagram Window. |
| The Media Window | Browse and work with your pictures, videos, sound files, and other media, in the Media Window. |
| The Reports Window | Reports are displayed in the Reports Window. |
| The Book Window | Books are displayed in the Book Window. |
| The Query Window | Queries are stored instructions for retrieving and displaying information taken from your family tree file. You can create, view, edit and run queries in the Query Window. |
| The Map Window | View events and places marked on maps. |
| The Web Search Window | A Web Browser within a window. It is designed to make it as easy as possible to transfer data from web pages on the Internet, to your records |
If you wish, you can have all of these windows open at the same time. You can also switch between any or all of them, without having to close them. Each of these windows, when open, will have an icon representing it in the Navigation Bar. Simply click on the relevant icon to switch to that window.
To close any of these windows, except the Focus Window and the Records Window, click on the little cross in the top right corner of the application's icon in the Navigation Bar. Alternatively, each of these windows also has a small close button in the top-right corner of the window. You can usually see it just below the main application close button.
With the exception of the Focus Window and the Records Window, you can if you wish have multiple instances of all of these windows, open at the same time. You can configure the extent to which you want windows to be re-used in the Workspaces tab of Preferences.
In addition to these workspace windows, there are also five special dialog boxes (form-like windows) that deserve to be mentioned here. These are:
| The Property Box | The Property Box is your main data entry window. It is designed to be used alongside, and in conjunction with, workspace windows. It can be docked at the side of the main application window, or be allowed to 'float' in front of it. |
|---|---|
| The Citation
Window |
The Citation Window is used for entering and viewing details of source citations. |
| The Note Window |
The Note Window is the main window for entering notes. |
| The Automatic Source Citation Pane | The Automatic Source Citation pane, when open, is always docked at the top of the main application window. You can use it to specify source citations to be automatically added to fields and records that you add or update. |
| The Projects Window | The application Welcome screen. Select a project to open, or create a new one. |
