The Automatic Source Citation Pane is used to prepare a source citation, or display a citation that has previously been prepared in the Citation Window. When automatic source citations are enabled, the prepared citation will be applied automatically to all new data that you add to your project, when you add it; or to existing data when you modify it. Automatic source citations work equally whatever technique you use to create new fields or records, or to modify them. It doesn’t matter whether you are entering data via the Property Box, using diagram-based editing in the Diagram Window, or low-level editing in the Records Window, automatic source citations will work in all cases.
To open the Automatic Source Citation Pane, click on the Automatic
Source Citations Pane button
on the main application
toolbar.
Before you can enable automatic source citations, you must have a prepared citation. At a minimum, this means that there must be a Source record selected in the pane's Source field (see prepared citation). You can also specify further details of your prepared citation if you wish. The fields available dependent on the source type, and on whether the Source record is generic or templated. If the source is a templated source, you will be able to specify citation fields that are specific to that template. You can change any of these details, including the original Source record, at any time, without disabling automatic source citations, and the new details will be included in automatic source citations from then on.
Although you can specify details of the prepared citation in the Automatic Source Citation Pane, it is usually easier to do this in the Citation Window (see also Citation with a Prepared Citation). Click on the button to open the Citation Window to view and edit the prepared citation. One important difference between the Automatic Source Citation Pane and the Citation Window is that the former does not show any details of the Source record - it just shows the name of the Source record. It does however show citation-specific details, and even shows a count of the number of 'Text from Source' fields, notes and media that form part of the citation (these are the 3 links on the right-hand side of the pane - click on them to view or edit the relevant data). The Citation Window, on the other hand, allows you to view and edit both citation-specific details and, if you wish, Source record details.
Automatic source citations are only applied when the button has been clicked, and is displaying as 'Enabled', or when the button has been clicked in the Citation Window. When automatic source citations are enabled, you will see ‘Auto-Citation Enabled’ in the bottom right corner of the application status bar. The Automatic Source Citation Pane is always open when automatic source citations are enabled. Automatic source citations will be automatically disabled if you close the Automatic Source Citation pane, or clear the currently selected source record in the pane (or modify its name in any way), or click in the Citation Window.
An automatic source citation is not applied to fields that already have that source citation. Family Historian will consider that a field already has a given source citation if and only if, it has a citation to the same Source record, and the value of the Where within Source field in this citation matches the automatic source citation value (or if they're both blank) and the values of the templated citation fields, if any, also match.
To apply an automatic source citation to existing data,
click on the cog button
and choose the Copy
Prepared Citation option (or click the button, when viewing the prepared citation in the
Citation Window). You can then use the Paste Citation button
on the Property Box's Citation
List Pane, to apply the citation to any existing field.
Although primarily designed for automatic source citations, the pane can also be used as a quick way of finding and selecting a source record, and as a quick way of creating and viewing a source record. It can also be used as a quick and convenient way of specifying a source citation to be copied and pasted, to apply to existing data.

The Automatic Source Citation Pane is designed to be used in
conjunction with all workspace windows, but particularly with the Web Search Window, using
drag-and-drop. If you are viewing a web page in the Web Search
window, you can select text identifying the source and either copy and
paste it into the Source field, or click on the selected text, and
drag-and-drop it onto the Source field. Then you can select a
source record with a matching name (the dropdown list will display these
when you drop onto the Source field), or you can create a new one using
the commands on the cog button
menu.
You can also drag-and-drop text into all other fields of the pane. To learn more, see Drag-and-Drop.
