The Navigation Bar

Navigation Bar

The Navigation Bar is a bar that displays down the left-side of the main application window.  It displays one icon for each open Workspace Window*.  There is no limit to the number of Workspace Windows you can have open at any one time.  It is possible, using options on the Windows menu, to see more than one Workspace Window at a time, but normally you can only see one because any other open Workspace Windows are hidden behind it.

The Navigation Bar makes it easy to see which Workspace Windows you have open at any one time.  In the example on the left, there are 4 workspace windows open - the Focus Window (with a magnifying glass icon), the Records Window (with a database icon), the Map Window (with a red pin icon) and the Diagram Window (with a small diagram icon).

The current workspace window in this case, is the Map Window, marked in orange.

As well as making it easy to see which Workspace Windows you currently have open, the Navigation Bar also makes it easy to switch between them.  Just click on the Workspace window you require to bring it to the front.

To close a Workspace Window, click on the little 'X' in the top-right corner of the window's box - except that, usually, you cannot close the Focus Window or the Records Window.

You can also right-click on the icons on the Navigation Bar, and choose options from the Dropdown menus that appear, to either close the window or lock it (prevent it being re-used).

See also Workspace Windows.

* The Records Window is a small exception because by default, for reasons of convenience, it always has an icon in the Navigation Bar, even if it is not actually open.  However, this is ignored for the present discussion.
