How to Add Relatives by Click-and-Drag in Diagrams
To add relatives in diagrams, click-and-drag on the box that you want
to add a relative to. Click down to add children, click sideways to add
spouses, and click up to add parents. When you do this Family Historian
will try to 'guess' what you are trying to do. If a relative can be
added at the point you have dragged to, a box with a dotted frame will
appear showing roughly where the new relative will go. If you release
the mouse button at this point, a menu will appear giving you the chance
to confirm which relative type you were trying to add.
This simple version needs a few caveats:
- The above-description assumes that your diagram is oriented
top-down. If you are using a different orientation, adjust
accordingly.
- You cannot add relatives if moving/resizing is enabled - if, that
is, the Enable Moving/Resizing button
is pressed (see the Diagram toolbar).
- You cannot add a relative to a tree if the tree does not display
that kind of relative. For example, you cannot add a child to an
ancestor in an ancestor tree. For this reason, users often prefer to
use All Relatives trees for adding
relatives by clicking-and-dragging.
- Keep an eye on the status bar (the bar at the foot of the
application window) when dragging. If a box can be added in the
position to which you are dragging, the status bar will tell you what
kind of relative Family Historian thinks you are trying to add. If a
box cannot be added in this position, there will be a message in the
status bar telling you why not.
When adding spouses and children, you can indicate, by appropriate
positioning, where the new spouse or child is to go, in the existing
list of spouses or children.
