Although listed here as a tab used in the Report Options Dialog, this tab can also be used in the Book Settings Dialog. This Help page covers both contexts of use. For simplicity and convenience, the body of this page refers to the 'Report Language' throughout, rather than 'Report or Book Language'. Please substitute 'Book Language' for 'Report Language', if these options are viewed in the context of a book.
Before choosing an option here, if the current project language (the language used in your project) is not English, it is important to specify this in the Header record of the project. On the View menu, click on Special Records, and then Header Record to view the Header record in the Property Box. The language is specified in the Language field.
Most reports can be output in different languages. To output a report in a language other than English, you need to install a language pack for that language - see How to Install a Language Pack. Any language packs you have installed can be selected using the Report Language field (see below). Alternatively, you can also specify a default output language in the International tab of Preferences. The default output language will be used as the default language pack for any report or diagram, including the current report, unless you specify otherwise by setting the Report Language field in this tab, to anything other than Default.
If the Report Language field shows that a language pack will be used with the report, a number of options will be displayed, to mark various items of text in the report in different colours. The actual options displayed will vary, depending on whether the selected language for the report is also the project language or not (i.e. depending on whether this is same language rendering or other language translation - see About Language Packs for more on these terms). In short, there are 3 possibilities:
| Project Language | Every project has an associated language. If you do not
specify the language of your project it defaults to English.
If you are working in a language other than English, it is
important to specify the correct language. You can do this
in the Header record of the project. Make sure that the
correct project is open, and click on the View menu, then Special
Records, and finally Header record. Select the required
language for the Language field. |
|---|---|
| Report Language (or "Book Language" if viewing settings for a book - see first paragraph above) |
The language of a report can be the same as the project language, but doesn't have to be. If the report language matches the project language, this is called same language rendering. If the report language does not match the project language, it is called an other language translation. You can select a report language in the Language tab of Report Options. Alternatively, you can specify a default language for all reports (the Default Output Language) in the International tab of Preferences (accessible from the Tools menu). If you do that, this becomes the default report language; but it can still be overridden in the Language tab of Report Options, for particular reports, if required. If the language you wish to select is not available, you will need to install a language pack for that language, or create your own. |

| Mark text where automated translation is missing or fails | Shown if other language translation or same language rendering. See table in How to Product Reports in Different Languages to learn more (rows with Highlight in blue in the Default Marking if not Translated column). |
| Mark text where 'attribute value' translation is missing | Shown if other language translation
only. See table in How

Marking if not Translated column). |
| Mark untranslated notes | Shown if other language translation
only. See table in How
to Product Reports in Different Languages to learn more
(rows with Highlight in
yellow in the Default
Marking if not Translated column). |
| Mark untranslated sentence 'overrides' | Shown if other language translation
only. This is applicable to narrative reports only. Family
Historian will automatically generate sentences for narrative
reports using templates supplied in fact definitions.
However, it is possible to override the default sentences by
changing the value of the Sentence field in the Facts tab of the
Property Box, or in the Witnesses Window. Where the sentence has
been overridden in this way, these are called sentence
overrides. Sentence overrides are not
translated if same language rendering, and are
translated using 'miscellaneous' translation (see above) if other
language translation. However, it is also possible to
mark sentence overrides with a default background colour (Highlight
in grey) so that sentence overrides are easy to
spot. This option is not ticked by default. To learn
more, see the note against "Fact and Witness Sentence Overrides"
in the table in How
to Product Reports in Different Languages. |
