This tab is used for Individual, Family, Source, Repository, Media and Place records.
The top part of the tab shows a list of all the notes associated with
the current record. There are 5 different types of note, all of which
except fact notes, can be added by clicking on the Add Note
button
on the toolbar.
When you add a note, the note is created immediately as an empty
note. You can then type in the details. By default, new
notes are displayed in the Note Window
(this is an option in Preferences).
If you change your mind after creating a new note, and want to
remove it, click Undo on the Edit menu.
The 5 types of note that can be displayed in the Notes tab are these:
| 'Local notes' that apply to the current record only | The most common kind of note. These are normally labelled as "Note about..." followed by the record name. |
|---|---|
| Shared Note for a Couple | Only applicable when the current record is an Individual. If you want to add a note for a given Individual, but the note applies equally to his or her spouse, you should add it as a Shared Note for a Couple. The note will appear in the notes list for both spouses. |
| Shared Note Record | If you want to add a note that is applicable to more than one record (and not just to two spouses), you should add a link to a Note record. This can be to an existing Note record, or to a new one (click the button in the Select Note Record dialog, to create a new one). Any number of records, of different types, can all be linked to the same Note record. |
| Shared Research Note | A Research Note is a note that is separate from all other notes. It is a note you make for your own research purposes only (see Research Note for more details). Research notes are stored as records. You can link to them from any number of other records, of different types. This can be a link to an existing Research Note record, or to a new one (click the button in the Select Research Note Record dialog, to create a new one). |
| Fact Note | Fact notes are notes associated with facts (see the Facts
tab). Unlike all the other notes listed above, Fact notes
cannot be added by clicking on the Add Note
button. They can only be added on the Facts
tab of the Property Box (and are only applicable to
Individual and Family records). But although they cannot be
added on the Notes tab, they can nevertheless optionally be viewed
in the Notes tab. |
Click-and-drag on a horizontal gripper bar
below the toolbar, to resize the list and increase or
decrease the space available for notes.
Each note can be viewed and edited in the edit box in the bottom half of the Notes tab. You can also double-click on the edit box, or click the long thin vertical button to the right of the edit box, to open the note in the Note Window, if you wish.
The toolbar buttons have the following functions:
| Item | Description |
![]() |
Add a note. A dropdown menu offers you a choice of the kind of note to create (see above). |
|---|---|
![]() |
Delete the selected note (if a local note, fact note, or Shared Note for a Couple). If the note is a Shared Note Record or a Shared Research Note, only the link from this record to the shared note will be deleted. If you want to delete the actual Note record or Research Note, you can do so in the Records Window. |
|
These buttons are used for re-ordering notes. Not all notes can be re-ordered. |
![]() |
Enable or disable the display of fact notes - that is, notes attached to facts which are associated with the current record. These notes can also be viewed in the Facts tab of the Property Box. |
![]() |
If the currently selected note is a Shared Note Record or a
Shared Research Note, this Go To button will
cause the linked record to be viewed in the Property Box. If
the note is a Shared Note for a Couple, clicking this button will
switch to viewing the note in the context of the other
spouse. If the note is a fact note, clicking this
button will switch to the Facts tab, to select and view the fact
in question. After clicking the Go To button, you can return to where you had been by clicking the Go Back button on the
main Property Box toolbar. |
