If Internet Data Matching is enabled for data providers Findmypast, MyHeritage or both, Family Historian will check whether records in the current project match data records stored in the relevant provider's databases on the Internet. Only records you view in the first two tabs of the Focus Window are checked - that is, the Spouses & Children and Parents & Siblings tabs - and only, in each case, if their Private flag is not set. These checks are done automatically with no special action on your part. If matches are found, a 'hint' showing the number of matches found, will be displayed in a green and white circle in the bottom right corner of the relevant person's box, in the Focus Window. Click on the hint to view details of the match. If you 'hover' the mouse over the hint, a popup will display more information about the matches found.
When you click on a hint to view the matches found, a web-page is displayed where you can click on buttons to 'Confirm' or 'Accept' a match, or to reject it if it is an incorrect match. If you confirm a match, you are recommended to copy any new data you have found into your Family Historian record for the person in question. The data is not copied automatically.
Tip: When updating your records from data provider web pages, we recommend that you use 'drag-and-drop' in the Web Search window, to copy the data into the Property Box. This way you can update your records without having to do any typing. Before you do so, however, we recommend that you first use the Automatic Source Citations pane to specify the source for your data - which you should be able to do, again, without having to type any text. When automatic source citations are enabled, all the new or updated data will be automatically given the source citation you specify. So don't forget to disable automatic source citations as soon as you have finished inputting the data!
MyHeritage provides two kinds of matching: 'Record matches' which are matches against historical data records, and 'Smart matches' which are matches against family trees that other genealogists have created.

When you confirm a match or reject it (which you do within the data provider web-page that you are taken to, when you click on a hint), Family Historian will normally detect that the match has been confirmed or rejected and update hints accordingly. However, it can sometimes happen for technical reasons, that Family Historian hints get out of sync with the data provider, with regard to the status of matches (this is more likely to happen if you use an external web browser to display record matches, than if you use the Web Search Window). If Family Historian does get out of sync, you should manually refresh the hint to correct it. You can do this by right-clicking on the box for the person in question, and choosing 'Refresh Internet Matches' from the dropdown menu that appears. Alternatively, if you let the mouse hover over the hint, so that the the popup window mentioned above opens, you can click on the button in the top-right corner of the popup window. This will also refresh the match.
Although in some cases, you can view full details of a match without having to pay, you will normally need a paid-for account with the relevant data provider. When you click on any link, you will be told if a paid-for account is required, if you don't already have one. Look out for significant discounts for Family Historian users with MyHeritage accounts. There is normally a discount for Family Historian users when you open a MyHeritage account in this manner. These will be advertised, if available, on the web page you see when you click on a link. Note: these discounts will normally only be available if you take out a new data subscription with MyHeritage on the web page you are taken to, when you click on a hint within Family Historian. To learn more about discounts for Family Historian users, please see www.family-historian.co.uk/aidm.
| Hint Click Action | By default, if you click on a hint in the Focus Window, you will be taken to a provider web page, displaying a list of the matches found. However, you can alternatively specify that clicking on the hint causes a popup to be displayed instead (the same popup that is always displayed if you 'hover' the mouse over the hint, and which also contains a clickable link to the match results page). |

| Location to Display Matches |
You can choose whether you want to display the match results page in an external web browser, or in the Web Search window. Tip: Although you should always be able to drag-and-drop text from the Web Search window into the Property Box, you may not be able to do this with an external web browser. It depends on what web browser you use, and on its current settings. Consequently, if you wish to use drag-and-drop, you may prefer to use the Web Search window to display match results. |
| Display Match Progress Indicators | If this option is enabled, a small grey clock will be displayed in the bottom right corner of a person's box when a new search for a match is in progress for that person. Also, if match data is later updated (perhaps as a result of changed information), the hint will briefly flash (for less than one second), to show that an update has occurred. |
