The Edit Book Dialog is a floating
window that is opened by clicking
in the Book List Dialog.
Alternatively, click in the Book List
Dialog, to create a new book. Once you have provided a name for
the book, the Edit Book Dialog will be opened to allow you to add items
to the book. The Edit Book Dialog can also be accessed by clicking
in the panel on the right side of
the Book Window, when viewing a book in
the Book Window.
The Edit Book Dialog is used to manage and edit the content of books. Books can have a title page, a table-of-contents, an index, and of course chapters. The contents of the book - the chapters - will usually consist of reports that you choose to add, and/or charts and diagrams. These are generated by Family Historian (configured and tweaked, if necessary, by you, with your choice of chapter headings etc). If you wish, you can also add free text (free text is text that you write yourself) as either chapters, or as additional text inserted into other chapters. You might also use free text for a preface, acknowledgements, or a copyright statement.
See How to Add Content to a Book or Booklet for tips on using the Edit Book Dialog to add content to a book.
Tip: The Edit Book Dialog is a floating window which means that you can make any changes you like to other windows, even while it is open. The Books Dialog, which displays a list of books in the current project, is another floating window.
Tip: Editing a book is likely to be slower if Auto-Refresh is ticked; which is why that option is not ticked by default.

have many settings on many different tabs. All items have an
'item' tab which allows you to specify basic settings that are
common to all items. Some settings - such as fonts, layout, footers and headers - are set in the Book Setttings Dialog (see below). |

| Auto-Refresh Book |
If this option is ticked and the current book is open in the
Book Window, it will be refreshed automatically whenever any
change is made to the book in the Edit Book Dialog. It is
normally recommended that this option should be left unticked
because refreshing a book can be slow. Click the 'Refresh
Book' button to manually refresh a book (this button will be
greyed if the book is not currently open in the Book Window). Note: If auto-refresh is enabled, the book will be refreshed using the "Standard Build" option (see Book Build Types). |
| View Book | Displays the book in the Book Window. |
| Refresh Book | Click this button to rebuild the book so that it reflects any changes you have made in the Edit Book Dialog or elsewhere. This button will be greyed if the book is not currently open in the Book Window (see the 'View Book' button above). |
