You open or close the Source pane by clicking on the Show Sources
button
on the Property Box toolbar.
By default, the Source Pane has a yellow background, to make it easily distinguishable from the rest of the Property Box. It is normally displayed at the bottom of the Property Box when the Property Box is docked at the side of the window, and on the right of the Property Box when the Property Box is floating - but this can vary depending on your screen size, and is in any case configurable. If you do not have a large screen, you can also specify that you want the Source Pane to open as a separate window, if you prefer (see the Property Box tab of Preferences).
If the Source Pane is too small, click-and-drag on Gripper Bars, in the area separating the Source Pane from the rest of the Property Box, to re-size it. Gripper bars can be horizontal or vertical.
Horizontal gripper bars look like this:

Vertical gripper bars look like this:
Some of the fields of the Source pane are described below:
| Sources For | This lists all the fields in the record which contain data, and for which a source can be cited. Some subfields cannot be given separate source citations. For example, a single source citation is used for both the place and date of birth. If the source citation only applies to one of these, this fact should be noted in the Note field. |
|---|---|
| Source | This list is a list of source citations associated with the currently selected item in the field above. |
| Entry Date | This and all of the remaining fields, provide details about the source citation selected in the Source list. Typically Entry Date is used to store an entry date in, say, a register. However, you can also adapt it to store other dates, if citing a non-document source. |
| Assessment | Your assessment of the reliability and significance of the source you are citing for the given item of data. |
| Where within Source | If the source record is a document, you could use this field to store a page reference. When citing non- document sources, however, you can adapt this field appropriately, to simply specify in more detail which aspect of the source is relevant. |
| Text From Source | Again, this field is most obviously appropriate for document sources. |
| Note | Use this field to store any notes you wish to make about the current source citation. |
To add a new source citation, click on
on the toolbar. If there is no record yet for the source you wish to
cite, you will be given an opportunity to create one.
If often happens that you with to apply the same source citation
details to more than one field. Use the Copy Citation
and Paste Citation
buttons on the toolbar to copy and paste an existing source citation.
If you are inputting a significant amount of data from a given source, you are recommended to use the Automatic Source Citation Pane. This allows you to specify a source citation which will automatically be applied to all new or modified data, as you insert it or modify it, until you cancel the automatic source citation.
