Report Options Dialog: Sources Tab

Although listed here as a tab used in the Report Options Dialog, this tab can also be used in the Book Settings Dialog.  This Help page covers both contexts of use.

This tab allows you to specify whether and how source citations should be displayed in footnotes and end notes, within reports.  The actual content and style of footnotes for source citations and bibliography entries, are not configured here.  These can be configured in the Sources tab of Preferences, which is accessible from the Tools menu.

Fields

Show Source Citations Uncheck this if you don't want source information to be displayed.
List 'Whole Record' Source Citations against Individual's Name With Individual records, you can specify sources not just for items of data such as events and attributes, but also for the record as a whole. Check this option is you want 'Whole Record' source citations for an Individual to be listed against the Individual's name. If not shown against the name, 'Whole Record' source citations are not shown at all.  This option has no effect on reports which are not about Individuals.
Combine Identical Citations for Same Source Identical citations to the same source are combined to save space, and reduce the number of items in the Sources listing.  If you are displaying pictures for source citations (source record pictures, citation pictures or both), two citations only count as identical if, given the current display options for pictures (see below), the pictures that will be displayed for each of them, if any, are the same.
Use Short Footnotes for Citations to Already-Cited Source Use the Short Footnote format for citations to a source, if that source has already been-cited.
Use “Ibid.” for Run of Repeated Citations to a Source “Ibid.” is a Latin abbreviation meaning “in the same place”. Where you have a run of 2 or more source citations that refer to the same source, to avoid unnecessary repetition, the word “Ibid.” is output instead, for all or part of the citation, for the second and subsequent occurrence of the source (unlike the previous option, this only applies to consecutive source citations).
Location of Source Citations Source listing can be given at the end of each record on the same page, at the end of each record starting on a new page, or at the end of the report.
Show Source Pictures You can associate pictures with sources (i.e. with source records). For example, the picture might be a scanned image of a birth certificate. If you want these pictures to be displayed as part of the Source Listings, check this option.
Show Citation Pictures

It may occasionally happen that you wish to associate a picture not just with a source, but with an actual source citation. For example, suppose your source of data for a man's occupation, is his son's birth certificate, which includes this information. You could cite this source record next to the father's occupation. And you could even link that citation to the area of the image of the birth certificate, which mentioned the father's occupation.

Max Pictures Per Source The maximum no. of pictures to display, per source.
Max Pictures Per Citation The maximum no. of pictures to display, per source citation.
Location

Specifies where the picture will be displayed. If a source record has multiple citations, its picture will only appear once, unless the location is ‘Below Each Citation’, in which case the picture will appear in each context. All locations are supported when a report is saved as a word-processor document (RTF format) or as web page (HTML format), except “To the Right of the Text”. If you select that location and save in RTF or HTML format, the pictures will in fact display above all citations.

Max. Picture Height Specify the maximum height that you want pictures to have.
Max. Picture Width Specify the maximum width that you want pictures to have.
Gaps Brings up a dialog box which allows you to specify the gap left around pictures, and the gap left between the picture and its caption, if any.
Enlarge Small Pictures to Max. Width If this option is checked, any pictures that are narrower than Max. Picture Width will be enlarged.
Show Captions with Pictures Check this if you want pictures to have captions.
Inc. Source Title/Citation Number Check this if you want the Source title to be included in the caption for Source pictures, and if you want the citation number to be included in the caption for Citation pictures. This options is not usually needed if the picture is displayed immediately below the citation that it relates to.
Inc. Picture Title in Caption Check this if you want each picture's title to be included in the caption.
Append from Source Record > Text from Source Append Text from Source recorded in the Source record, to the source citation.  See also "Text from Source and Notes" below.
Append from Source Record > Notes Append all notes recorded in the Source record, to the source citation.  See also "Text from Source and Notes" below.
Append from Citation > Text from Source Append Text from Source recorded in the citation (link to Source record), to the source citation.  See also "Text from Source and Notes" below.
Append from Citation > Notes Append all notes recorded in the citation (link to Source record), to the source citation.  See also "Text from Source and Notes" below.
Show Bibliography If enabled, a Bibliography section will be added to the report or book, listing all sources that have been referenced, in alphabetical order. The Bibliography section is only included if not empty, and always appears at the end of the report or book (but before the index if there is one).

Text from Source and Notes

There are effectively two ways that Text from Source and/or Notes can be referenced in footnotes.  They can either be appended, by using one of the 4 options listed above (this is the recommended way); or - supported, but not usually recommended - you can if you prefer, modify the Formats that are used to specify the content and styles of footnotes.  If you take the latter approach, you may want to do this for all Source Template records that you use, and also modify the templates for generic source records.  To use the latter method, see the Sources tab of Preferences.  If you choose to use both methods, you will get duplication of information.  This of course is also not recommended.
