Report Options Dialog: Page Layout Tab

Although listed here as a tab used in the Report Options Dialog, this tab can also be used in the Book Settings Dialog.  This Help page covers both contexts of use.

Family Historian reports can print on any size of paper, but if you use very small or very large paper, it is up to you to adjust the column indents, paragraph indents, tab widths, and possibly even picture widths and fonts, so that everything is laid out in a sensible way. Family Historian will not prevent you using a column indent that leaves no room for text between the start of that column and the next. It will also not prevent you from making a column start off the edge of the page, or so close to a right-aligned picture that, again, there is no room for text. In these cases, the text in question will simply not appear.

In many cases, it may not be immediately clear how Family Historian is using column indents, paragraph indents and tab widths. If in doubt, the best solution is to experiment and see what effect changing these values has on a given report. In some cases, particularly with tab widths, changing the value may have no effect.

If a particular report does not use Column Indents at all, they will not appear in the Page Layout tab. However, it may be that a given report does use them, but only with certain options which you have not selected. A little experimentation will usually make clear how the report's layout can be controlled. Remember that you can always click on the Restore Defaults button to restore the default values.

Fields

Symmetry You may wish to set this to "Mirror Margins, Headers and Footers on Even Pages" if you plan to print double-sided.
Orientation Portrait or Landscape
Margins Set margins from edge of the paper. Some users may wish to leave a wide margin for taking notes, if they plan to take reports with them on trips. If you do this, take care to adjust the column indents, paragraph indents and tab widths if needed (see discussion at the start of this topic).
Min. Header/Footer Specify a minimum depth for the header and footer.
Header The header is divided into 3 areas: left, centre and right. You can set the text and associated font, for each area separately.
Footer Like the header, the footer is divided into 3 areas: left, centre and right. You can set the text and associated font, for each area separately.
Column Indents Column Indents are only shown for reports where they are used. Some reports make use of 4 column indents, some have 2, and some have none. The best way to work out which parts of a report make use of Column Indents is to change the values, and see which parts of the report move. For example, in the Individual Summary report, event and attribute labels line up on Column Indent 1. Their dates line up on Column Indent 2. And the place of the event, or attribute, lines up on Column Indent 3. Column Indent 4 is not used in this case. However, with LDS Ordinances (same report) all 4 column indents are used.
Gap (see Column Indents) Specifies the minimum gap that must be left between each column. This value is only shown if there are 2 or more column indents.
Tab Width The Ancestor Outline and Descendant Outline reports use tab width, to control the indent between each generation. Other reports use them for other purposes.
Paragraph Indent Like Column Indents, the Paragraph Indent value is not used in all reports, and will not appear if not applicable.
Main Numbers Where numbering is used in the main body of the report, you can specify the approximate width of the area allocated for the numbers, in terms of the number of digits to leave space for. For example, a value of 3 would leave room for approximately 3 digits.  Decimals can be used, if required.
Source Numbers You can specify the approximate width of the area allocated for the numbers in the Sources section of the report, in terms of the number of digits to leave space for. For example, a value of 3 would leave room for approximately 3 digits.  Decimals can be used, if required.
Start Page Number Specify a value here if you want page numbering to start from something other than 1.
Line below header If checked, a horizontal line will appear below the header.
Line above footer If checked, a horizontal line will appear above the footer.
Start records on new page If checked, each new record entry will start on a new page.
