Property Box

Property Box: Links Tab

The Links tab is only used with Media records. It allows you to view, add and delete links to Media records.  It displays all records that are linked to the current Media record.  If a picture is linked to an event (or fact), the record that the event belongs to will be listed in the first column, and the event will be listed in the 'Detail' column.

You can add a note for each link.  You can also view more details about each link in the 'Flags' column.  The icons in the Flags column have the following meanings:

Frame Link
The link is a frame link.  If not show, the link is a simple link.  You can convert a simple link to a frame link by clicking on the 'Add Frame Only' button on the toolbar (see below).
Exclude from Diagrams and the Focus Window.
Exclude from Reports, Books and web-pages.
Do not let Family Historian generate a caption automatically for this picture (or other media) when it is displayed in a report or web-page. Instead use the associated annotation (if any) as the caption.

Beneath the list of media items is a toolbar. The toolbar buttons have the following functions:

Item Description

Add Frame Link
Enables or disables Add Frame Link mode.  In this mode, you can click-and-drag on a picture to draw a stretchy box (a frame) round a person's face, or other area of the picture.  When you release the mouse button, Add Frame Link mode is ended and you will be prompted to choose the record you want to link to this area - although there is also an option to link it to nothing, if you just want to annotate some part of the picture.

Add Simple Link

Add a link to the picture (or media item) as a whole (or a simple annotation).  This is similar to the previous option, except there is no frame.

Add Frame Only
If you already have a simple link, and you want to convert it to be a frame link, select the link and choose Add Frame Only.  You will then need to click-and-drag on the picture to add the frame.

Select Frame
If you want to resize or reposition a frame, first select it by clicking on the link and then click on Select Frame.  If the link is a frame link, 8 little white boxes will appear on the corners and sides of the frame.  Click-and-drag on any of these to resize the frame.  Click-and-drag inside the frame to reposition it.  Click anywhere else within the picture to unselect the frame (or click a second time on the Select Frame button).

If the selected link is not a frame link, you will be invited to add one (as if you had clicked on Add Frame Only - see above).

Delete Link
Deletes the selected link.

Move Up

Moves the selected link up the list.

Move Down

Show All Frames

Go To

Switches the Property Box to showing the linked record.  Click the Go Back button  on the Property Box toolbar, to return.

Immediately below the toolbar are three fields which all relate to the selected link.  These are:

Link Note This is an annotation note attached to the selected link.
Exclude From The options are to exclude the linked images from
  • Diagrams and the Focus Window
  • Reports and web pages
  • All publications
  • None
Use Link Note as Caption Tick this option if you want the link note to be used as caption for the linked image, instead of the usual generated caption.

The Links tab of the Property Box is very similar to the Links tab of the form displayed in the Display Pane of the Media Window.  See that window for more details.
