The Edit Translation Dialog can be used to create new translations, or to view and edit existing translations, for the currently selected translation table in the Language Pack Translations Dialog.
When you create a new language pack, the new pack will have default tables where some 'From' values have been supplied, but the 'To' values are missing. You are recommended to translate all the default 'From' values, and supply more translations as needed. Notice that some of the default 'From' translations may include one or more substitution codes like "%s" or "%d". The former ("%s") represent a position where a string will be substituted by Family Historian. The latter ("%d") represent a position where a number will be substituted. Your 'To' translation must contain the same codes in the same order within the text. For example, "Note on Wife: %s (%d) - shared note" might be translated in a French language pack as "Note sur Femme: %s (%d) - note partagée". Actually the translation could separate the codes more than this example does. For example, "Note sur Femme: %s [numéro %d] - note partagée" would work as a translation. But "Numéro %d: note sur Femme: %s - note partagée" would not work because the order of the codes has now been reversed.
As well as special codes, some translation will also have special case values. See 'Special Case' in the table below for more on these.
| Translate From | The text to be translated. This cannot be blank. |
|---|---|
| Translate To | The translation. This can be left blank. The reason
you might want to do this is if you wanted to record a list of
items to be translated, and then come back later to do the actual
translations. |
| Special Case | Sometimes a translation may vary depending on special
circumstances. Family Historian supports a number of special
cases. Most of the time you should only use special cases,
where the default values to be translated already make use of this
feature. In those cases, the Special Case values have the
following meaning:
It is possible to create custom special case values by selecting the '(custom)' option, in which case you will be able enter your own special case values. Custom special case values entered in this way must contain alphanumeric characters and underscores only. And you will only be able to enter text in upper case. Custom special case values are an advanced feature, and should not be used unless you know what you are doing. They will only work if you modify the language pack plugin to make use of them. |
| Create New / Update Existing | Shows the current mode of the Edit Translation Dialog. You can also change mode. The buttons available will depend on the mode. |
|---|---|
| Create/Save | In Create mode, is labelled 'Create'. Press the Create
button to create a new translation for the current table. In Update mode, is labelled 'Save'. Press the Save button to save changes to a selected translation. Duplicate translations (that is, translations with the exact same text for 'Translate From', 'Translate To' and 'Special Case') are not allowed. Bear in mind that comparisons are case-sensitive - that is, differences of case are treated as differences. So if the only difference between two translations was that one had a capital letter where the other had a lower-case letter, this would be allowed. If there is a translation currently selected in the current translation table, newly-created translations will be inserted immediately after it. If there no currently selected item in the translation table, newly-created translations will be appended to the table. Either way, newly-created translations will then be selected. Pressing the Create or Save button does not close the Edit Translation Dialog. |
| Previous | Greyed in Create mode. In Update mode, allows you to switch to the previous item in the current translation table. You will be prompted to save any changes. |
| Next | Greyed in Create mode. In Update mode, allows you to switch to the next item in the current translation table. You will be prompted to save any changes. |
| Clear / Delete | In Create mode, is labelled 'Clear'. Press the Clear
button to clear the fields In Update mode, is labelled 'Delete'. Press the Delete button to delete the current translation. You will be asked to confirm. |
