Diagram Options Dialog

Diagram Options Dialog: Text Tab

The text displayed in boxes in diagrams is determined by the text scheme. A text scheme can be simple or complex. It can ensure that different text is displayed in different boxes or the same text in all boxes. Some schemes display different information depending on which diagram options are being used. Some may display different information depending on the sex of the box owner, on record flags, and/or on other conditions.

Family Historian is installed with a number of standard text schemes. You can select whichever scheme you want for the current diagram, from the text scheme list.

You can modify any text scheme or create new custom text schemes of your own if you wish. Custom text schemes are listed together with standard text schemes (but with '(custom)' after their name).

The text scheme determines the colour of the text, and the fonts and styles used. It also determines the alignment of the text (left, right, centred or justified), and how text is indented. Different lines can have different text alignment and indentation, as well as different fonts, styles, etc.

Current Text Scheme shows the text scheme that is currently being used in the Diagram Window.

To get a feel for what different text schemes do, make sure that the current diagram has an interesting selection of Individuals about whom you have recorded a reasonable amount of data. Next position the Diagram Options dialog to one side of the screen so that it obscures your diagram as little as possible. Then select each text scheme in turn and click Apply. As you do this, notice that the diagram changes to use the new text scheme (and the selected text scheme's name is displayed in the Current Text Scheme box). Be aware that text schemes can't show data you don't have. If you have not entered any census data, for example, the Census Data text scheme will not show much information.

Language Issues

The Text Scheme list, and the buttons available, will vary in appearance, depending on whether or not you have selected a language pack (either by default, or explicitly) in the Language tab of this same dialog (Diagram Options).  We will say that the tab is in language mode if a language pack is selected in the Language tab.  If not in language mode, the Text Scheme list has only one column, 'Text Schemes', and the buttons displayed to the right of it are:

In language mode, however, the Text Template has two columns: the first column is just the Text Scheme name.  The second column, 'Lang.', has a green tick showing for a given text scheme, if a language variant has been defined for that text scheme.  A language variant of a text scheme is essentially a translation of that text scheme, into the required language.  In language mode, the buttons displayed to the right of the text scheme list are:

Edit Text Scheme and Edit Base-level do the same thing - they allow the original, untranslated text scheme to be edited.  And Delete Text Scheme and Delete Base-level do the same thing - they allow the original, untranslated text scheme to be deleted. The change of name is made solely to clearly emphasize the difference between editing or deleting the language variant, and the original 'base-level' text scheme.

In language mode, the name of the language pack is displayed as a link, just above the Margins & Tabs button.  Clicking on this link causes a jump to the Language tab.

When a language pack is selected in the Language tab, the Diagram Window will always use the language variant of the currently selected text scheme if there is one.  If there isn't, it will use the original untranslated text scheme instead.

Language Variants are Part of Language Packs

Diagram text schemes can be imported or exported, using the Import/Export submenu of the File menu.  It might seem that if you import or export a text scheme, you will also import or export all the language variants of that text scheme.  That is not the case.  Language variants of text schemes are kept within language packs.  When you create a language variant, the language variant is added to the current language pack.  And if you delete a language variant, the language variant is deleted from the current language pack.  Language packs can be imported and exported too; so if you wish to share language variants of text schemes, you do so by sharing the appropriate language pack.

Fields

Current Text Scheme Shows the text scheme currently in use in the Diagram Window. To change to another, select any text scheme in the list and click OK or Apply.
New Create a new text scheme. The Edit Text Scheme Dialog is opened for you to specify the name and contents of the new scheme.

See Create a Simple Text Scheme for help with this.

Clone Makes a copy of the selected text scheme. You will be required to provide a name for the copy.
Edit Language Variant
(Language mode only)
Edit the language variant for the selected text scheme, using the Edit Text Scheme Dialog (this dialog is used for editing both text schemes and language variants of texts).  If the selected scheme is the current text scheme (the one currently being used in the Diagram Window) any changes you make to the language variant within the Edit Text Scheme Dialog will be reflected immediately in the Diagram Window when you click Apply (that is, when you click Apply within the Edit Text Scheme Dialog).

If there currently is no language variant for the selected text scheme you will be prompted to create a new one, by copying the current text scheme.
Delete Language Variant
(Language mode only)
Deletes the language variant for the currently selected text scheme.  Will be greyed if the currently selected text scheme does not have a language variant.
Edit Text Scheme

or

Edit Base-level
(Language mode only)
Edit the text scheme (the original untranslated text scheme) using the Edit Text Scheme Dialog. If the scheme being edited is the current text scheme (the one currently being used in the Diagram Window) and if you are not in Language Mode, any changes you make within the Edit Text Scheme Dialog will be reflected immediately in the Diagram Window when you click Apply (that is, when you click Apply within the Edit Text Scheme Dialog).
Delete Text Scheme

or

Delete Base-level
(Language mode only)
Deletes the currently selected custom text scheme. Standard text schemes cannot be deleted, but they can be reset to their original installation state. To do this, select the scheme, click Edit Text Scheme or Edit Base-level and then click on Restore Defaults in the dialog box that appears.
Margins & Tabs Open the Text Box Dimensions Dialog to set the size of the text margins and tab widths.
