Property Box

Property Box: Notes Tab

This tab is used for Individual, Family, Source, Repository and Place records.

The top part of the tab shows a list of all the notes associated with the current record. There are 3 different types of note, all of which can be added by clicking on the Add Note button on the toolbar:

Local Notes The most common kind of note. Applies to the current record only.
Family Notes Only applicable when the current record is an Individual. If you want to add a note for a given Individual, but the note applies equally to his or her spouse, you should add it as a Family Note. The note will appear in the notes list for both spouses.
Note Records If you want to add a note that is applicable to more than one record (and not just to two spouses), you should add a link to a Note record. When you add a link this can be to an existing Note record, or to a new one. Any number of records, of different types, can all be linked to the same Note record. Notes that can be shared in this way are sometimes called Shared Notes.

Click-and-drag on a horizontal gripper bar below the toolbar, to resize the list and increase or decrease the space available for notes.

Each note can be viewed and edited in the bottom half of the Notes tab. You can also double-click on the edit box, or click the long thin vertical button to the right of the edit box, to open a separate resizable Memo window, to view and edit the note, if you wish.

The Toolbar

The toolbar buttons have the following functions:

Item Description
Add a note.  A dropdown menu offers you a choice of the kind of note to create (see above).
Delete the selected note (if a local or Family note).  If the note is a shared note, only the link from this record to the shared note will be deleted.
These buttons are used for re-ordering notes.
Fact Notes
Enable or disable the display of fact notes - that is, notes attached to facts which are associated with the current record.  These notes can also be viewed in the Facts tab of the Property Box.
If the currently selected note is a shared note, this Go To button will cause the underlying Note record to be viewed in the Property Box.  If the note is a family note, clicking this button will switch to viewing the note in the context of the other spouse.  If the note is a fact note, clicking this button will switch to the Facts tab, to select and view the fact in question.

After clicking the Go To button, you can return to where you had been by clicking the Go Back button Go Back button on the main Property Box toolbar.
