When accumulating genealogical data, it is a very good idea to document not just the information you accumulate, but also where the information came from - i.e. your sources. A ‘source’ can be whatever you choose to consider the source of your information is. A typical example of a source would be a birth, death or marriage certificate, or a census record. But equally a source could be a person, or perhaps one particular interview with a person. It could also be a book, a document, a part of a document, a graveyard (perhaps, even, a single grave in a graveyard), or even another GEDCOM file (which might or might not have been created by Family Historian).
The fields in the Source tab are designed to fit best with documents of some kind. This is because a Source record typically does represent a document. However, if your source isn't a document, you must adapt them as best you can. For example, if the source is a person, you could give their name as the Title, and leave other fields blank.
The Text From Source field is normally intended to be used for quoting text from a source document.
Like all fields, the Repository field is optional. You can link a Source record to a repository if you wish to. Repository records simply provide details of an address at which potentially many sources may be located.
Sources can be associated with media - such as scanned images of
documents. To associate a source with a picture, click on
on the Media tab toolbar. Media can also be linked to Source
records in the Media
Window.
