Edit Media Item
The Edit Media Item dialog box is used to edit details relating to a
picture or other kind of Media record, which has been linked to a
record, such as an Individual, Family or Source record. You can use it
both to edit details about the picture/media record, and to edit
aspects of the link.
The fields above the picture (or icon representing the item)
all relate to the picture/media item itself. These are Title, Date,
Picture Note, and Keywords.
Immediately below the picture (if there is one) is a toolbar with
buttons that allow you to zoom in or out in various ways. You can also
reposition your view of the picture, if zoomed in, or opt to display it
in the Media Window or in an external viewer.
The fields below the toolbar all relate to the link between
the current person/record and the picture/media item. If, for
example, the Media record is a picture being linked to an
Individual, you can link the Individual to their specific face
in the picture (see How to Link Individuals to Their Faces in Pictures).
Fields
| Title |
Title of the picture/media item. |
| Date |
It is a good idea to enter a date for a picture - even just to
the year - if this is known. Family Historian can use this date to
provide additional information in picture captions - such as how
old a given person was at the time. You can open a Helper dialog
for editing the date, either by double-clicking on the field, or
by clicking on the 3-dot button that appears when you click on the
field, or hover over it.
|
| Picture Note |
This should be a note about the picture/media item as a
whole, and not just about the person/record whose details you are
viewing in the current context. There is another unlabelled note
field that can be used for that (see below). |
| Keywords |
You can provide keywords for media items if you wish.
Multiple keywords must be separated by commas. Alternatively, if
you click on, or hover over, the Keywords field, a button with 3
dots will appear at the right end of the field. Click on this
button to bring up a Helper dialog. You can use this dialog to
select keywords from a list of other standard and
previously-used keywords - and add new ones.
You can use keywords as a useful way of organising and
searching for media items, in the Media Window.

| Link to Face |
See How to Link Individuals to Their Faces in
Pictures
|
| Select Frame |
The 'frame' is a box overlaying the picture, that indicates the
person's face in the picture, if you have linked an Individual
to their face. If you wish to move or resize the frame,
click on this button to select it first. The frame will
display with little white boxes in the corners and sides. Click-and-drag inside the frame to
move it at this point, or click-and-drag on any of the little
white boxes to resize it. If you press the Delete key when
the frame is selected, it will be deleted.
|
| [Unlabelled Note Field] |
Use this note field to add a note about the current
person/record in relation to the picture/Media item. For
example, the note might say something about what the person is
doing in the picture, how they came to be in it, what they had
been doing, and so on. |
| Exclude from Diagrams |
Tick this option if you do not wish this picture to be used as a
picture of the linked person/record in diagrams. It will
also be excluded from use in the Focus Window.
|
| Exclude from Reports |
Tick this option if you do not wish this picture to be used as a
picture of the linked person/record in reports. It will also
be excluded from use in books, web-pages and family tree CDs or
DVDs.
|
| Use Note as Caption |
By default, Family Historian will generate captions for pictures
for you. But if you prefer, you can write your own caption using
the unlabelled Note field. |
