| How Related | Opens the dialog box which shows you up to 9 different ways that two people are related. If they are not directly related to one another, it will show you how they are indirectly related through a third party, if they are. |
|---|---|
| External File Links | Open the Work with External File Links dialog to manage links, and check for, and fix, any broken links. |
| Named Lists and Flags | Open the dialog to perform various tasks relating to Named Lists and Record Flags. |
| Work with Data ► |
This submenu allows you to open a dialog to view and edit values for the following data types that have been used in the file:
If you wish to, you can use the dialog box to update these values throughout your file. For example, suppose you discover that you have spelled a given occupation inconsistently in different contexts. Without having to locate the actual records (though you can do that too if you wish) you can change values, and even merge multiple different values together. |
| Record Identifiers | Open the dialog. This dialog allows you to renumber record identifiers (although this is not recommended) and to perform various other tasks relating to record identifiers. |
| Fact Types | Open the Fact Types Dialog to work with fact definitions and fact sets. |
| Automatic Source Citations |
Open the Automatic Source Citation pane which you can use to define, and enable, an automatic source citation. When you have enabled an automatic source citation, new and updated data will automatically be given the defined citation. You can also copy and paste an automatic source citation, if you wish to apply it to existing data that you are not changing. When automatic source citations are enabled, the text 'Auto-Citation Enabled' will show in the last pane of the status bar, in the bottom right corner of the main application window. |
| Re-order Out-of-Sequence Data | Family Historian will keep events, attributes, children, marriages, and spouses, in correct chronological order, if you use the Property Box to update all such details. But if you have imported data from elsewhere, or if you have not always used the Property Box to enter details, some data may not be in the correct chronological order. You can use this dialog box to re-order all out-of-sequence data throughout the file. |
| Uncategorised Data ► | 'Uncategorised Data Fields' (also known as UDFs) are fields
which Family Historian has created to store data that it does not
recognise. This can occur when a GEDCOM file is opened or imported
that was created by another application, if the file contains
fields which are invalid in some way, or which are the other
application's extensions to GEDCOM. UDFs can also be created when
you import a GEDCOM file into a new project, if you previously
chose the option Store Uncategorised for
handling other applications' extensions to GEDCOM, in the File
Load/Save tab of Preferences.
Family Historian treats UDF data as text. The submenu allows you to either Find Uncategorised Data or Recover Uncategorised Data. If you choose the latter option, Family Historian will use the latest information it has to identify and process UDFs, to convert them into fields which can be fully incorporated into your project. Details of which fields were 'recovered' in this way, if any, are written to a log file. Log files can be accessed from the Windows menu. |
| <some plugins may be listed here> |
If you have installed or written any plugins (see next item),
you can opt for them to be added to the Tools menu. If so,
they will appear at this position on the Tools menu. |
| Plugins | Opens the Plugins dialog which shows a list of installed
plugins. You can use the Plugins dialog to install more
plugins, and to access the Plugin Store to download free
plugins. You can also create your own plugins if you wish
using tools and documentation provided. Everything you need
to do this is available from the Plugins dialog. |
| Preferences | Open the dialog to set your preferences for various aspects of the program. |
