| Geocoding ► |
See Map Window Legend. 'Geocoding' is the assignment of latitude and
longitude to a place. This is done automatically by
default (requires an Internet connection) but it can also be
done manually. The following options all work with
multiple selection. |
| Mark as Tentative |
Marks all selected geocodes as tentative (i.e. to be checked). Only available when the current selection in the list pane includes one or more non-tentative geocodes. |
| Unmark as Tentative |
Removes the 'tentative' status from all selected (and previously tentative) geocodes. Non-tentative geocodes have a white box. Tentative geocodes have a pink box.
Only available when the current selection in the list pane includes one or more places with tentative geocodes. During automatic geocoding, if a match is found, but only for part of the map details and not for all of it, the item will be geocoded but marked as tentative (pink box). You are recommended to check all tentative geocodes, to make sure that they are correct. You can if you wish specify in Preferences (Map Window tab) that all automatic geocodes should initially be flagged as 'tentative'. |
| Remove Geocoding |
Removes the geocoding for the currently selected items. Places where geocoding has been removed are not automatically geocoded once again, immediately. But the next time the project is opened, having been closed, they will be geocoded automatically once again. Only available when the current selection in the list pane includes one or more items which have been geocoded (whether tentative or not). |
| Block (no auto-geocoding) |
Marks all selected ungeocoded items as 'blocked' which prevents them from being automatically geocoded. Only available when the current selection in the list pane includes one or more items which have not been geocoded. |
| Unblock |
Removes the block from selected items which have been blocked. Only available when the current selection in the list pane includes one or more items which have been 'blocked'. |
| Refresh Geocoding |
Refreshes the automatic geocoding for the selected items which have not been 'blocked'. Only available when the current selection in the list pane includes one or more items which have not been 'blocked'. You can opt to block established geocodings from being refreshed unless they are tentative - see the Map Window tab in Preferences. |
| View Legend | Displays the Map Window Legend which explains the meaning of the icons used in the List Pane of the Map Window. |
| Zoom ► | Options to zoom the map in and out. |
| Time Slider |
Enables the time slider control, which appears below the map. In order to use it, the map must contain one or more marker sets of the 'Individuals and Places' type. The time slider has no useful role with marker sets which just show the location of (undated) Place records. When the time slider is enabled, you can drag it sideways to hide or show places. Only those markers which have dates that fall within the current range of the time slider, will be visible. This way, it is easy to watch the movements of people over time, as locations changed. By default, markers which have no date associated with them (which includes both markers for Place records, and markers for undated events) will be hidden when the time slider is active. However, this is configurable in Preferences (Map Window tab). |
| Enable Marker Dragging |
If a marker is in the wrong position and you wish to move it, you can drag the marker to the right position - but first you must enable marker dragging, by clicking this option. Caution: It can easily happen that you get several markers on top of one another. Consequently there is a risk that you might move the wrong one. To prevent this, you are recommended to always hide all markers except the one you wish to move, before dragging markers. You can easily hide all markers in a marker set by unticking the 'Check All' option in the top-left corner of the Map Window. Sometimes when you want to move a marker, the destination is not close to the starting position. In that case, you may find it easier to locate the destination in the map, and drag the place from the marker list on the left side, to the desired location in the map. You do not need to have previously enabled marker dragging to do this. |
| Refresh Map |
Refreshes the map images you are currently viewing. Map images are downloaded from the Internet, and cached locally for better performance. Refreshing map images is not related to, and has no effect
upon, geocoding. |
| Use Current Position as 'Home' Region | Change your 'home region' to match whatever view the map window is currently showing. This option affects, and only affects, the behaviour of the View Home Region toolbar button and menu command (see above). |
| Reset 'Home' Region | Resets the home region to its installation default. |
| Options | Opens the Preferences dialog at the Map Window tab. |
