This menu is only available when the Diagram Window is active.
See also the Diagram Toolbar.
Save Diagram | Saves the current diagram as a "Saved Chart". These can be viewed later, and opened, by clicking on | on the View menu.
---|---|
Save Diagram As ► | Saves the current diagram as one of the following... |
Family Historian Chart | Standard format for saved Family Historian diagrams. |
PDF File | Probably the best format to use if you wish to send a chart to someone else, or get a printer to print it for you. |
Enhanced Metafile (.emf) | Standard picture format. Especially suitable for large diagrams (but PDF format is probably better). |
Bitmap File (.bmp) | Standard picture format. |
JPEG File (.jpg) | Ditto |
GIF File (.gif) | Ditto |
PNG File (.png) | Ditto |
PCX File (.pcx) | Ditto |
TIFF File (.tif) | Ditto |
Targa TGA File (.tga) | Ditto |
Adobe Photoshop File (.psd) | Picture format used by Adobe Photoshop. |
Placeable Metafile (.wmf) | Standard picture format. |
Custom Diagram Type | When you save a diagram as a custom diagram type, you are effectively creating a new diagram type - one which will have many (but not all) characteristics of the current diagram, and one which you can re-use in the future. You can access custom diagram types from the View menu. You will usually need to have previously selected a record to be the root of the diagram. |
Copy Diagram | Copy the current diagram to the clipboard in a choice of 2 formats: Enhanced Metafile (good for large diagrams) or Bitmap. |
Insert Into Diagram ► |
This submenu is used for inserting additional diagram elements into an existing diagram. A diagram element could be an entire tree (any kind), a fan chart, a picture, a text box, a line, a rectangle, an arrow, free hand text and more. There is no limit to the number of trees, or any other kind of diagram element, that you can have in a diagram. When you insert a tree, Family Historian will put the new tree in the centre of the Diagram Window - even if that means that it overlaps an existing tree. It will also automatically enable Moving/Resizing, and set 'Tree' moving as the drag-and-move action. This means that you can immediately click on any box within the tree to move it. To cancel Moving/Resizing mode, click on (i.e. 'uncheck') Enable Moving/Resizing in the Diagram menu (or the equivalent toolbar button). The Shape Toolbar (accessible
from the Diagram toolbar) provides quick access to all of the
above items. See the Shape
Toolbar page for a detailed discussion of all of the
various commands on this submenu. |
Find Next Box For Individual | It can happen that you get more than one box for a given
Individual within a diagram. This feature lets you easily jump
between all duplicate boxes for a given Individual. Simply select
any box for the Individual in question, and then click on Find
Next Box for Individual. The selection will switch to
the next box for the selected Individual. Repeat to loop you
through all of the duplicate boxes.
If a given Individual has no duplicate boxes you will be told that no other instances were found. Tip: You can easily see which boxes are duplicates by enabling Check for Duplicates in the General tab of the Diagram Options dialog. Tip: A fast way to search for duplicate boxes for a given selected Individual is to press the F3 key instead of using the menu command. |
Check For Duplicates | As well as this menu command, there is also a Check for
Duplicates option in the Diagram Options. If the latter
is enabled, Family Historian will automatically check for
duplicates when you open a new diagram. Depending on the specific
options you use, Family Historian will not only detect duplicate
boxes within the diagram, it will also link them using coloured
ribbons and/or will close duplicated branches of the diagram to
keep duplication to a minimum.
If checking for duplicates was not enabled when you opened the diagram, you can run Check For Duplicates… on the Diagram menu at any time to enable it, and (depending on your current diagram options for duplicates) to hide duplicated branches. Even if Check for Duplicates is already enabled in Diagram Options, you may still want to use the menu command to hide duplicated branches if you have been clicking on branch expansion buttons to explore trees, and now have a number of duplicated branches. Tip: Check For Duplicates… is affected by front-to-back ordering of trees. If one tree is layered 'in front of' another (even if it isn't actually positioned in front of it), Family Historian will close duplicated branches in the 'background' tree in preference to closing branches in the 'foreground' tree. So you can control which tree gets its branches closed, by right-clicking on any box in one of the trees, and selecting appropriate commands from the Order submenu. |
Hide/Show Boxes ► | |
Hide Selected Boxes | All selected boxes will be hidden. When you hide a box, the
whole branch leading 'outwards' from that box is also hidden. For
example, if you hide an ancestor box the whole branch of ancestors
leading out from that box is hidden.
You cannot hide the root box in a tree, as this would cause the whole tree to be hidden. If you wish to get rid of an entire tree you must delete it. To delete a tree, click on any box in the tree and click on the Delete key. Leave the selection at and press OK. Then confirm that you wish to delete the tree.Tip: A quick way to hide a box is to click on it with the right mouse button and select Hide from the dropdown menu that appears. |
Show Hidden Boxes | Check this option to show all hidden boxes. By default these
appear with a purple background. You can then unhide whichever
hidden boxes you wish by selecting them and unticking the Hidden
state on the Box States menu (see below).
To hide hidden boxes again click on Show Hidden Boxes again, to 'untick' it. Tip: A quick way to unhide a box when Show Hidden Box is enabled is to click on it with the right mouse button and untick Hidden on the dropdown menu that appears. |
Expand/Close Branches ► | A common requirement is to be able to close all branches except
one or two. This command allows you to do that. Simply
select the 'tip' box in any branch you wish to leave open
(press-and-hold the Ctrl key while clicking to select more than
one box). Then this command will close all branches except
the ones leading to the boxes you have selected. |
Show Expansion Buttons |
Hide or show expansion buttons. These are the little circular buttons on branch lines. They are crossed if the branch is hidden. Click on expansion buttons to hide or show tree branches. |
Expand Branch (one level) | As an alternative to clicking on expansion buttons, use this menu command to expand a branch for a selected box. If the branch has not previously been displayed, only the next level will be shown (e.g. one generation of ancestors or descendants). |
Expand Branch (all level) |
Click on this command to fully expand the branch of the selected box, as far as it will go. |
Close Branch |
Click on this command to close an expanded branch for a selected box. You can also click on an expansion button to do the same thing. |
Close Unselected Branches |
Click on this command to close all branches of all trees in
the current diagram, except where boxes are selected. |
Spouse Display Options ► | 'Spouses' refers to spouses of direct relatives of the diagram root. There are 3 display options for them: |
Spouse in Own Box |
Each spouse is assigned their own box. Is the best option for displaying information about spouses (and the only one which allows you to view pictures of spouses), but it produces larger diagrams than the other 2 options. By default, Remarriage boxes are not displayed if spouses are displayed in their own box; however, there is an option to override this if you wish to. See General tab of the Diagram Options dialog. in theThis option is not applicable to ancestor boxes. |
One Box Per Marriage | Spouses are not displayed in separate boxes; however, individuals who have more than one spouse, will be allocated an extra box (a Remarriage box) for each additional spouse. Standard text schemes make use of this Remarriage box to display spouse information. |
No Spouse Info |
Spouses are not displayed in separate boxes, nor are Remarriage boxes displayed. This option takes up the least amount of space. Use it when you are not interested in spouse information. With standard text schemes, no spouse information is displayed when this option is chosen. However, in your own custom text schemes you can show all of a person's spouses if you wish, even if this option is selected. If you do so, you should be aware that there will be no visual indication of which spouse is the parent of which child. |
Zoom ► | Zooming only affects how a diagram appears on the screen. It has no effect on the size of the diagram when printed. If you wish to change the size of a diagram when printed, you need to adjust Scaling. |
Actual Size | Revert to 'actual size' (i.e. 100% zoom). |
Zoom In |
Zoom in. Tip: A quick alternative is to press the + key on the numeric keypad (or Ctrl+L). |
Zoom Out |
Zoom out. Tip: A quick alternative is to press the - key on the numeric keypad (or Ctrl+K). |
Set Zoom Level | Specify a specific zoom level, as a percentage, to 2 decimal places. The maximum zoom is 500%. |
View Whole Diagram | Adjusts zoom and diagram position so that the whole diagram can be viewed. If Page Boundaries are being displayed the view will be extended to include all of each printable page. |
Select Area To View | When enabled, you can click-and-drag on the diagram to draw a stretchy box round the area you wish to zoom to. The zoom will occur when you release the left mouse button. Press the right-mouse button, or the Esc key, to cancel. |
Centre | Roughly-speaking, this centres the diagram on the diagram root. However, for Ancestor and Descendant diagrams, the root may appear near the top or bottom or (depending on the orientation) side of the Diagram Window, as appropriate. Does not cause the diagram to zoom in or out. |
Layout and Scaling ► | This submenu lets you control various related aspects of layout and scaling. |
Make All Boxes the Same Height (Width) |
Depending on the tree orientation, this will make all boxes the height of the current tallest box (vertically oriented trees), or make all boxes the width of the current widest box (horizontally oriented trees). The state is disabled in all boxes (see Box States below). |
Make All Boxes in the Same Row (Column) the Same Height (Width) |
Depending on the tree orientation, this will make all boxes in each row the height of the tallest box in that row (vertically oriented trees), or make all boxes in each column the width of the widest box in that column (horizontally oriented trees). The state is disabled in all boxes (see Box States below). |
Reset All Box Sizes /Enable Autosize | All menu commands that change the size of boxes disable the | state for those boxes. This option re-enables for all boxes. The effect of this is that all boxes will revert to their default size. If any pictures have been resized using , these also will return to their default size. For more on this, see Box States below.
Make Selected Boxes the Same Height (max) |
Makes all selected boxes the height of the tallest selected box. Only available if at least 2 boxes are selected. The state is disabled in the selected boxes (see Box States below). |
Make Selected Boxes the Same Height (min |
Makes all selected boxes the height of the smallest selected box. Only available if at least 2 boxes are selected. The state is disabled in the selected boxes (see Box States below). |
Make Selected Boxes the Same Width (max) |
Makes all selected boxes the width of the widest selected box. Only available if at least 2 boxes are selected. The state is disabled in the selected boxes (see Box States below). |
Make Selected Boxes the Same Width (min) |
Makes all selected boxes the width of the narrowest selected box. Only available if at least 2 boxes are selected. The state is disabled in the selected boxes (see Box States below). |
Scale Pictures to Fit Box Height |
For all selected boxes which have pictures at the side of the box (left or right), this menu command resizes their pictures to fit the box height. At the same time, the overall width of each box is adjusted to maintain the width of the text area of the box. If you wish to adjust the height of pictures which are displayed within the text, you should temporarily change Diagram Options to move the pictures to the side of the text, adjust the box size appropriately, use this command to adjust picture size, and then change Diagram Options to move pictures back within the text. The state is disabled in the selected boxes (see Box States below). |
Make All Rows the Same Height (All Columns the Same Width) | Depending on the diagram orientation, this will make all rows the height of the current tallest row, or make all columns the width of the current widest column. |
Reset Row Heights (Widths) | Depending on the diagram orientation, this will either set all rows back to their default height, or set all columns back to their default width. |
Diagram Scale... |
Set any scale for any diagram. The default setting (no
scaling) is 100%, but you can choose values which are either
greater or less than this. Tip: Diagram scaling can also be adjusted to any value at any time, by updating the value of the Scaling field in the General tab of the Diagram Options Dialog. |
Scale Diagram To Fit Exact Number of Rows (Columns) Per Page | Depending on the diagram orientation, you will be prompted to
specify either how many rows you want to fit vertically onto each
page, or how many columns you want to fit horizontally onto each
page. If rows are not already the same height (or, depending on
orientation, columns the same width) you will be warned that they
will be resized to make them the same size. Then the Diagram scale
will be adjusted to fit the desire number of rows (or columns)
onto each page.
Tip: This function does not automatically align page boundaries with row or column boundaries. But this can be done quite easily. To do it, click on 'Show Page Boundaries' - this will display page boundaries as a grid. Click-and-drag on any grid intersection to move the grid, and hence page boundaries. If you press the Ctrl key while doing this, the page boundary will 'snap' to the nearest row or column boundary. |
Reset Diagram Scaling | Resets scaling back to the default value (100%). |
Enable Moving and Resizing |
Check this option to open the Movement Control Box to enable moving boxes, branches and trees, and to enable resizing of boxes. When Moving/Resizing is enabled, selected boxes have little white boxes in their corners and sides to show that they are selected, instead of the usual little black boxes. Click-and-drag on any little white box to resize. |
Page Boundaries ► | |
Show Page Boundaries |
Show (or hide) page boundaries. A grid of lines appears. Each filled and used rectangular area marked out by the grid corresponds to a printable page - that is, to a physical sheet of paper that will be printed if you print the whole diagram. A diagram that extends over multiple grid areas will be printed on multiple sheets of paper. The grid rectangle size is determined by the paper size used by your printer. It will change automatically if you switch to a different paper size in your printer settings (or switch between portrait and landscape mode). To change printer settings, click on Print Setup on the File menu. To see all printable pages, click on View Whole Diagram after showing page boundaries. Tip: Click-and-drag with the left mouse on page boundary intersections to move page boundaries. Tip: Usually you will use the Scaling option on
the General
tab of the Diagram Options dialog to set the size of a
diagram when printed, Tip: If you press the Ctrl key while moving page boundaries, they will 'snap' to the nearest row/column boundary. This is especially useful if you have adjusted row/column sizes so that an exact number will fit within each page (see below). |
Avoid Page Boundaries |
When checked, Family Historian will layout diagrams so that nodes (boxes) do not overlap page boundaries - either at the side or at the top. Tip: You can specify how near a box can get to a
page boundary by setting the Avoid boundaries gap in the More
Dimensions dialog, accessible |
Family Connection Mapper... | Opens the Family
Connection Mapper which is used to mark lines connecting
boxes or branches. It can even create a 'route' connecting
any two individuals in a tree. When the How Related tool is
used to show graphically how any two Individuals are related, it
will create a marked route in a diagram - which can be
modified and configured using the Family Connection Mapper. |
Order and Grouping ► |
This submenu allows you to control the display order, front-to-back, of selected diagram elements. A diagram element is anything that can be inserted into a diagram - such as a picture, text box, line or rectangle. Also, each tree counts as a single diagram element. To select a tree for the purposes of ordering, simply select any box within the tree. As well as allowing to change the ordering of diagram elements,
this submenu also allows you to group diagram elements into
grouped objects, or ungroup them. Only trees cannot be
grouped with other diagram elements. |
Format |
The Format command can be used with all diagram elements, but it works a little differently depending on whether you are formatting one or more boxes in a tree or one or more other kinds of diagram elements (shapes, lines, pictures, etc). If you have selected one or more boxes in a tree, the Format
command opens the Override
Box Features dialog, allowing you to override any aspect
of the appearance of the selected boxes. To select
multiple boxes at the same time, see How
to Select Multiple Boxes in Diagrams. If you have selected one or more other kinds of diagram elements, you will be able to change their appearance using the Format dialog, which will have different tabs depending on what kind of diagram elements you are formatting. See Formatting Diagram Items to learn more. You cannot simultaneously format both boxes in trees, and other
kinds of non-tree diagram elements. |
Selection and Marks ► |
You can mark any nodes (boxes) that you wish to distinguish for any purpose. Marked nodes have a distinctive background colour (configurable using Sundry Colours in Diagram Options). Tip: An alternative to using Marks is to set Record Flags for Individuals, and specify conditions for box features based on these flags. This gives much greater flexibility than just using Marks. You specify box features in the Boxes tab of the Diagram Options dialog. Tip: You must be displaying boxes to be able to
see which ones are marked. This is controlled from the Boxes tab of the Diagram Options |
Select All Boxes |
Selects all boxes in the diagram |
Select Branch Boxes |
If you select one box and click this command, the entire branch
of boxes leading off from the first box will be selected.
This can be useful if, for example, you want to use the Format
command to give the entire branch a distinctive appearance of some
kind. |
Invert Selection |
Causes all selected boxes to become unselected, and all
unselected boxes to become selected. |
Mark/unmark Selected Boxes | Sets or clears marks for selected boxes. |
Set/Clear Marks Using Query | Sets or clears marks using a query. Using this technique you could, for example, mark all of your male ancestors who died of heart attacks under the age of 50 (say). This is a powerful feature which can be used in a number of ways for many different purposes. |
Select Marked Boxes | A quick way to select all marked boxes. |
Clear All Marks | Clears all marks in the current diagram. |
Box States ► | This submenu allows you to control the states of selected boxes. |
Autosize Box | When enabled (the default) Family Historian will size a box to fit its text. But if you manually resize the box (or use a command to force a non-default box size - see | above), it will disable autosizing and use the size you specify instead. Tick this option to re-enable box autosizing.
Align with Others in Same Row (Column) | When enabled (the default) Family Historian will keep relatives in the same row (or column - depending on the orientation), in line with one another. If you move a branch it will disable this state for the moved boxes. Tick this option to re-enable it, and force Family Historian to realign a box with the others in its row. |
Box Size Affects Row (Column) Size | When enabled, the row (or column - depending on the orientation) that the box belongs to will always automatically be kept as big as, or bigger than, the box height. Moving a box does not disable this state; but you may wish to set it off, if you have moved a box away from the row it came from, and the box size is now having an inappropriate influence on the row size. |
Attach to Row (Column) | When you move a box or branch, if 'within row' is ticked in the
Movement Control Box, Family Historian will continue to the treat
the moved boxes as part of the rows (or columns - depending on the
orientation) that they came from and will take these boxes into
account for row/column sizing purposes. If you do not wish Family
Historian to do this, remove this state for the moved boxes. |
Keep Near Parents | Enabling this for one box automatically disables it for all siblings of the selected box. Can be used with box descendant boxes, and with ancestor boxes in All Relatives diagrams. |
Hidden | This state is ticked for all hidden boxes. See Show Hidden Boxes above. |
Diagram Statistics | Displays a number of statistics about the current diagram. |
Settings ► | |
Restore Installation Settings | Sets all diagram settings back to their installation defaults. |
Save as Default Settings | Saves the current diagram settings as default settings. |
Options | Opens the Diagram Options Dialog. |
