Diagram Options Dialog

Diagram Options Dialog: General Tab

Why are some fields displayed in Red?

When you adjust most diagram options, Family Historian will usually apply just these changes 'on-the- fly' to the current diagram. There is no need to start again with a new diagram. This way you can experiment and make minor changes and observe the effect, until you get the results you want.

However, a small number of options called 'rebuild options' (the ones marked in red) are such that if you change them, the change cannot be applied on-the-fly in this way. You can change these options, but if you do, Family Historian will (when you press OK or Apply) discard all existing trees in the current diagram and will create a single new tree for you using the options you have specified. Even with these options, it is only the tree part of the diagram that has to be rebuilt. If you have inserted additional elements other than trees into the diagram (e.g. lines, text boxes, pictures, etc), these will be retained, even when the trees themselves have to be rebuilt.

See the Diagram tab of the Preferences dialog for more options relating to this. The text 'Red = 'rebuild option' (see Help)' is displayed in the bottom left hand corner of the dialog as a reminder. If you don't wish any fields to be coloured differently, or you want to use a colour other than red, you can configure this in the Diagram tab of the Preferences dialog.

By default, red colouring is used throughout the Diagram Options dialog to colour any field that, if changed, will require the trees in the diagram to be rebuilt. In practice such fields mainly occur in the General tab.

When a tree is rebuilt, any modifications that you have made to it, by expanding branches, or moving or resizing boxes will be lost. If you haven't made any changes of this kind, you may not realise or appreciate that the tree has in fact been rebuilt. In any case, you will be warned (and given the opportunity to cancel) before a tree rebuild occurs if it would have this kind of consequence. See the Diagrams tab of the Preferences dialog for options relating to warnings of rebuilds.

Fields

Tree

Possible values are Ancestors, Descendants, Ancestors and Descendants, All Relatives. The All Relatives tree shows Ancestors, Descendants, Descendants of Ancestors (e.g. cousins), and spouses of any of these. If you select a couple (e.g. by selecting their family record), the All Relatives tree will also show each of the couple's in-laws.

If the diagram shows multiple trees, this field will be <multiple>.

Style Only applicable to All Relatives trees. Choose 'Layered' for an All Relatives tree which allows more than one row per generation. Use 'Flat' for an All Relatives tree with only one row per generation.
Orientation Top-down, Left-right, Right-left, or Bottom-up.
Alignment

The alignment options depend on the orientation, and on the tree. For example, a descendant tree, oriented top-down, will have two alignment options: top or bottom. Choose 'top' if you wish boxes in a row to be aligned along their top-edge. Choose 'bottom' if you wish boxes to be aligned along their bottom edge.

For left-right and right-left oriented trees, you will be offered the choice of left or right alignment.

For Ancestor-and-Descendant (hourglass) trees, you have two additional options: 'inner' and 'outer'. In a top-down hourglass tree, for example, 'inner' alignment means that that ancestor boxes are bottom-aligned and descendant boxes are top-aligned. In the same tree, 'outer' alignment means that ancestor boxes are top-aligned and descendant boxes are bottom-aligned.

Scaling

Scaling affects the size of the diagram when printed. To print a diagram at half the normal size, set scaling to 50%. To set it to twice the normal size set scaling to 200%.

Tip: A convenient way to adjust the scaling for a diagram (when the Diagram Options dialog is closed) is to enable display of page boundaries, and click-and-drag on any page boundary intersection (one near the bottom right of the diagram usually works best) using the right mouse button. This lets you adjust scaling while seeing what the effect will be on the diagram size relative to page boundaries.

Generations Up

Not applicable to the Descendants tree. Is the number of ancestor generations required. Only sets the initial number of generations. You can use the expansion buttons to show more generations..

Choose All to view all generations up.

Generations Down

Not applicable to the Ancestors tree. Is the number of descendant generations required. Only sets the initial number of generations. You can use the expansion buttons to show more generations.

Choose All to view all generations down.

…counting down from…

Only applicable to the All Relatives tree. It specifies how the Generations Down value should be interpreted.

Suppose Generations Down is 4. If '…counting down from'… was each ancestor, this would mean that you want a tree that initially shows 4 generations down from each ancestor. The tree will also display 4 generations down from the root too. If '…counting down from …' was set to 'root', however, the number of generations going down from the tree root would still be 4. But the number of generations going down from each ancestor could be much greater. However many generations you had to go up to reach each ancestor, you would have to come back down that same number of generations, to show their descendants, and then an additional 4 generations again (or until you ran out of relatives of course).

Spouse Display Options

Not applicable to the Ancestors tree. There are 3 options:

  • No Spouse Info
  • One Box Per Marriage
  • Spouses in Own Box

These are the same settings that you change dynamically on the Diagram Window toolbar. See the discussion in Diagram Window.

Click on Options for more options relating to Spouse Display.

Spouse layout options

2nd spouse on other side:
If a person has one spouse only, the spouse will appear on the right if female, and on the left if male. A man or woman with 2 spouses will appear between them. Third, or greater, spouses will appear on the far right.
2nd spouse on the right:
If a person has one spouse only, the spouse will appear on the right if female, and on the left if male. A man with 2 spouses will appear to the left of both of them. A woman with 2 spouses will appear between them. Third, or greater, spouses will, in either case, appear on the far right.
All spouses on the right:
Spouse boxes always appear to the right.

Tip: These options specify the default layout position for spouses. However, you can rearrange spouse order whenever you want using the Shift Spouse buttons on the Movement Control Box.

Background

The options are:

Row Stripes
Paint stripes on a per-row basis.  Row stripes are based on the primary tree within the diagram; so diagrams which have no trees will have a plain background colour and no stripes.
Generation Stripes:
Paint stripes on a per-generation basis. For all diagrams except the All Relatives diagram, this is the same as Row Stripes. In the All Relatives diagrams alone, you get multiple rows per generation.    Generation stripes, like row stripes, are based on the primary tree within the diagram; so diagrams which have no trees will have a plain background colour and no stripes.
Depends on Diagram Type:
With this option, the background varies depending on the diagram type. With an All Relatives diagram you will get Generation Stripes (see previous). With an Ancestor diagram you will get one colour: the colour labelled 'Background if anc. colouring'. With Descendants diagrams you will also get one colour: 'Background if desc. colouring'. With Ancestors and Descendants diagrams, the background will be split into two halves. The top (ancestor) half will be coloured using 'Background if anc. colouring', and the bottom (descendant) half will be coloured using 'Background if desc.colouring'.  See below for how to set these various colours.  The type of a diagram is determined by the primary tree within the diagram.  Diagrams which contain no trees will have a simple plain background.
One Colour
With this option, you get a single colour background (that is, 'Background if one colour').
Picture
Choose this option to display an image of any kind in the background. The image can be faded. Within each page, the background image can be displayed tiled, stretched, centred or zoomed. If you want a textured background of any kind, use an image that gives a suitable sample of the required 'texture' (e.g. an image of a brick perhaps). By tiling this image, you can repeat it across the background of each page of the diagram, and give the diagram the required background texture.

To the right of the Background field is an Options button.  If you choose one of the various colour options (that is, any option except Picture), clicking on the Option button will open a dialog box to let you set the colour or colours in question.  Clicking on the Options button when you Picture selected will open a dialog box to let you change the picture, and/or picture settings.

All colours can also be set using the Sundry Colours button (see below).

Boundary Lines If you are displaying background stripes, this option allows you to display lines along the boundaries of the stripes, to give them more definition. You can also have these lines if you wish, even if not displaying stripes.
Relationship Descriptions

For all diagrams, you can have relationship descriptions, specifying how the people in that row are related to the diagram root. These descriptions can be on either side of the diagram, or on both sides.

The Font button brings up the font dialog, to allow you to specify the font to be used for Relationship Descriptions.

Inc. [[private]] Notes

You can mark a section of any note as private by putting it in doubled square brackets - e.g. [[secret]]. Tick this option if you want private notes to be included when displaying notes in boxes.

If you have opted to include private notes, tick Remove [[ and ]] if you want the doubled square brackets to be removed.

Check for Duplicates Check this option if you wish a check to be made for duplicate boxes. Click on Options to configure how duplicates are handled. Depending on the options you choose, Family Historian will automatically close duplicated branches and link duplicate boxes with colourful curved ribbons.
Number out- of-sequence spouses

By default, spouses are normally displayed in sequence. But they can be displayed out of sequence if you re-order them using the Shift Spouse buttons in the Movement Control Box.

Also, in an All Relatives tree, non-ancestral spouses of male ancestors are positioned to the left of the ancestor, and non-ancestral spouses of female ancestors are positioned to the ancestors' right. Consequently these spouses may well not be listed in the correct spouse order, if read left-to-right.

Where spouses are not displayed in the correct spouse order, you can optionally display a little number next to each out-of-sequence spouse, to show what the correct sequence should be.

The Font button allows you to specify the font that should be used for the number, if used.

Auto-display root's siblings' branches Only applicable to the Ancestors and Descendants. Siblings of the diagram root are always displayed in Ancestors & Descendants diagrams, but unless this option is checked, their expansion buttons will be closed by default.
Use Fork Style for Lines Connecting Ancestors If checked, no marriage lines will display between ancestors. Instead, lines going up to ancestors will have a fork-like appearance. Ancestor boxes which are bound together with marriage lines can be moved apart horizontally, but cannot be moved apart vertically.
Except for 1st Row of Ancestors Only applicable to Ancestors & Descendants, when the previous option Use Fork Style for Lines Connecting Ancestors is enabled. Has the effect, if checked, of ensuring that marriage lines will always display between the first row of ancestors at least.
Show branch expansion buttons Shows or hides branch expansion buttons. See also the Diagram Window's toolbar.
No-offspring marker

The No-offspring marker is used if you want a line to be drawn below individuals who had no children. If you enable this option, the line will be displayed under the spouse box for an individual if the individual had no recorded children by that spouse, and either the Individual or his spouse's Count of Children field is set to 0; or the Count of Children for the couple's family record is set to 0.

With Individual records, the Count of Children field (Child Count) is set on the Fact tab of the Property Box.  With Family records, it is set on the All tab of the Property Box

Click the Options button to configure the options for this feature such as line colour, thickness and offset. You can also specify whether you want the line to appear under Individuals with no spouses, as well as no children.

The no-offspring marker option is only applied when spouses are displayed in their own boxes (see Spouse Display Options above) and when descendant boxes are top-aligned - or the equivalent of top-aligned if the orientation is not Top-Down (see Alignment above).

Sundry Colours

Click on the Sundry Colours button to open the Colours dialog, showing colours for diagrams. The Colours dialog is used to specify colours which, for the most part, are not specified elsewhere. Text colours, for example, are usually specified as part of a text scheme (see the Text tab) and are not included here. Box colours are usually specified in the Box tab and are not included here. Background colours are an exception. They can be specified here, but they can also be specified by clicking on the Options button next to the Background field.

There are two ways to open the Colours dialog to set diagram colours. You can click the Sundry Colours button in Diagram Options; or you can right-click on the background of a diagram and choose 'Sundry Colours' from the context menu that appears. The advantage of the latter approach, is that when you do it this way, any changes you make to diagram colours are immediately and automatically reflected in the current diagram window; so you can see what effect they have (these colours are all removed again if you can cancel the dialog). If you open the Colours dialog by clicking on the Sundry Colours button in the Diagram Options dialog, changes will not be displayed in the diagram until you click OK or Apply within the Diagram Options dialog.

Installation Settings Click on this button to reset all the settings on this tab to their original installation values. Note: to reset all diagram options to their original installation values, use the Restore Installation Settings… command on the Diagram menu.
