You may wish to add a preface, or acknowledgements, or a copyright statement, or other similar details. To do any of these things, open your book in the Edit Book Dialog, select in the list of available items on the left side, and click the button. If you are adding a preface, enter the text of your preface in the dialog box that appears, and click . At this point, the Item Settings Dialog will appear. Change the Heading to "Preface". Leave 'Short Heading' blank (it is only used to produce a shortened form of long headings, for display in headers or footers). Is the Preface a chapter in its own right? Probably not. So change 'Format' to Heading Level 1. Leave 'Start on' as 'New Page' and press . At this point, the Preface has been added but is in the wrong place. Select it and use the arrow keys to move it until it comes just after the Contents.
If instead of a preface (or as well as a preface) you wanted to write an introductory chapter, you would do the same thing, but you would change the Heading to a suitable title for your chapter, and you would leave 'Format' as 'Chapter'.
You could use the same technique to add notes to existing chapters, or to add an acknowledgement page, or a copyright page, and so on.
Fonts and other layout settings for your book can be changed by
clicking on the button to
open the Book Settings Dialog.
Books can have any page size you like, portrait or landscape. To
adjust these settings, click the
button when viewing the book in the Book Window. Page margins are
adjusted in the Book Settings Dialog.
Tip: Editing a book can be much slower if the book is
currently being displayed in the Book Window. If the Book Window
is open and performance is slow, close it.
