Diagram Options Dialog: Dimensions Tab

More Dimensions

Family Historian dimensions are given in your preferred units. You can choose between inches, centimetres, or millimetres. These are set in Preferences (accessible from the Tools menu).

Diagram Orientation Issue

All diagrams can be displayed in all orientations - that is, top-down, bottom-up, left-right or right- left. The dimension settings are applicable to all orientations. But for convenience all descriptions and labels are given as for top-down orientation.

Vertical Dimensions

Family Historian uses the Min proximity gap below boxes value to determine how close one box is allowed to get to another. It is the minimum gap that must be left below each box.

The Ancestor connector offset is only used in All Relatives trees where the Style is 'Flat'.  It specifies the distance between the horizontal crossing line that connects an ancestor box to their parents' child bar, and the child bar itself.  The 'child bar' is the horizontal line below a set of parents that all their children are connected to.  The 'crossing line' is only used in All Relatives diagrams.  It is usually dotted, but you can make it solid if you wish (see the Lines tab of Diagram Options).  If the Ancestor connector offset value is 0, the crossing lines will overlap child bars,  which is not recommended as this can result in a diagram which is confusing and hard to follow.

Other vertical dimensions are not described here as it is easier to see what they are used for by looking at the images on the right hand side of the More Dimensions dialog.

Other Dimensions

Relationship description gap If you are showing relationship descriptions, this value specifies how big a gap there should be between the relationship descriptions and the rest of the diagram.
Stretchy line zigzag width and height Stretchy lines are only used to connect remarriage boxes (see Spouse Display Options in the General tab of the Diagram Options Dialog). You can use these settings to control the shape of these stretchy lines, if you use them.
Avoid boundaries gap You can choose to prevent boxes overlaying page boundaries by clicking on the Avoid Page Boundaries button on the Diagram Window toolbar. The gap specified here determines how close boxes are allowed to get to a page boundary in that case.
Gap between trees These settings are used to control how trees are spaced out when you generate an Everyone diagram.
Icon size Use this setting to specify the size (height and width) of the space that you wish to allocate for each icon displayed below each box (if any). The display of icons is controlled on the Boxes tab of Diagram Options.

Note: This setting is used with vector format icons only.  Pre-installed icons use a vector format.  Custom icons usually are not.  Icon Size is ignored when displaying custom or legacy bitmap icons (if any) - that is, icons in bitmap file format.
Gap between icons This setting specifies the horizontal gap between icons, and the vertical gap between rows of icons.
