Merge/Compare Dialog (File Merge)

Family Historian supports 3 types of merging:

Corresponding to each of these there are also 3 types of comparing:

The Merge/Compare Dialog is used for all three types of merging/comparing. The documentation emphasizes merging more than comparing, because in practice the ability to compare records or files is often important primarily as a way of helping you get the merge right. However that is not always the case. Sometimes it is just the ability to compare files or records that you need. See File Merging and Comparing for an example of how you can use File Comparing to help you keep an audit trail of changes made to your file.

The differences between the different types of merging are explained in Introduction to Merging - the Three Types.

For more detailed information about the different types, see Basic Record Merging and Branch Merging and File Merging and Comparing.

To find out more about the Merge/Compare Dialog, see Features of the Merge/Compare Dialog.

Tip: It is always a good idea to make a backup of your file or project before making any significant changes to it, in case you make a mistake and want to ‘rollback’ your changes. Merging (any type of merging) is a relatively complex task, and you would be well-advised - especially if you are not already familiar and comfortable with the merge process - to make a backup of your file before you start.  See Backups for more information.
