The Focus Window (marked in red) with Property Box docked to the right

The Focus Window is the primary workspace window.  It displays information about a chosen person, called the 'Focus Person'. The name of the Focus Person, their dates if known, and their relationship to the File Root, are displayed in a box at the top of the window, together with up to 9 photos of them.

In the body of the window, information about the Focus Person's relationships are displayed on 4 tabs, under 4 headings:

Click on the Customize View link, in the top-right corner of the Focus Window, to change Preferences for the Focus Window (see Preferences Dialog: Focus Window tab for an explanation of the various options).

Next to each displayed relative of the Focus Person, is a small magnifying glass icon. Click on this icon to make that relative the Focus Person (or simply double-click on the relative's name or box). Direct ancestors of the file root have a downward-pointing blue arrow instead of a magnifying glass.  By clicking on these arrows, you can follow an easy path back down to the file root.

Right-click on any relative's name or box, to bring up a menu with options relating to that record.

You can Go Back to a previous Focus Person, by clicking on the left-pointing white arrow in the top-left corner, to the left of the first tab heading. If you subsequently wish to Go Forward again (i.e. undo the Go Back), click on the right-pointing white arrow next to it.

Click on on-screen links (e.g. 'Add Child' etc.) to add more relatives, or use the options on the Add menu.  Enter details for each person in the Property Box (the Property Box, when open, always shows details for the currently selected record).

Internet Data Matching

Numbers displayed in a small green and white circle, are Internet Data Matching hints.  These indicate that a possible match for the person in question has been found on a MyHeritage database.  Move your mouse over the hint to learn more about it, or click on it to see a list of matches.  The matches can be historical records or family tree profiles.

The list of matches are displayed on a MyHeritage web page, which can be viewed either in the Web Search window, or in an external web browser (this is configured in Preferences).  To view details of a match normally requires a data subscription with MyHeritage.  If you do not already have an account with MyHeritage, you will be prompted to open one if needed.  Look out for exclusive discounts for Family Historian users if you open a data subscription by clicking on a hint from within Family Historian.

Internet Data Matching can be configured on the Internet Data Matches tab within Preferences.  To learn more about Internet Data Matching, see the Internet Data Matches tab.
