Interactive Diagrams: Browse and Explore with Diagrams

Expansion Buttons

Every branch of every diagram has a button called an 'expansion button'. You can click on any expansion button to hide or show that branch. When you do this, the diagram automatically adjusts itself to make best use of the available space.

This diagram shows the ancestors of Amanda Peabody. Even if initially you had elected to only show 3 generations, you could still click on the expansion button above Naomi Prentice Salt's box, to see her ancestors.

If you then click on the expansion button above Philip Peabody's box, the diagram adjusts itself to make room.

If you click again on the expansion button above Philip Peabody's box, the diagram will hide the branch leading up from this box and revert to how it had been

If you decide that you aren't interested in Cameron Peabody's ancestors at all, simply click on the expansion button above Cameron Peabody's box, to hide all of his ancestors.

Remember that you are not limited to the initial no. of generations that you specify for the diagram. Wherever you see an expansion button, you can click it to expand the diagram and keep on exploring your relatives. Expansion buttons control the outward expansion of branches from the diagram root. For Descendant diagrams, branches expand down. For Ancestor diagrams they expand up. For Ancestor and Descendant diagrams, some expand up and some expand down. And with All Relatives diagrams, branches expand both down, and up, and then down again.

Working with Multiple Diagrams Simultaneously

If you are expanding an Ancestor diagram, clicking on expansion buttons will only hide or show ancestors. What if you want to see other relatives of the ancestors? In this case you can either select the ancestor and click on any of the diagram buttons, or diagram menu options, to see the other relatives in the same window. Or, if you prefer, you can open another window and view the selected individual's relatives in this second diagram window. There is no limit to the number of diagram windows you can have open at any one time. Each diagram window will have it's own icon in the Navigation Bar (this is the bar that runs down the left-hand side of the main application window) so switching between diagrams is easy.

Viewing Individual Data in the Property Dialog

The other aspect of browsing and exploring is examining all the data relating to each individual you encounter as you explore your data using diagrams. You do this using the Property Dialog. Double-click on any box in any diagram, to bring up the Property Dialog to view all details about that person. With the Property Dialog you can see all record details for a person, and all Multimedia (e.g. pictures) associated with that person. If you make any changes to a person's details, any open diagrams will update immediately to reflect the change. There is more on the Property Dialog later in the tour.
