System Requirements

Family Historian 3 runs under Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Vista.

It will not run under Windows 95 or earlier versions of Windows. It will also not run under Windows NT4 or earlier versions of Windows NT. It does not run under the Apple Mac (unless you run it under a Windows emulator).

You will need a CD-ROM drive to read the CD-ROM that Family Historian is installed from and approximately 20Mb of hard disk space to store the program and accompanying files.

Family Historian's requirements are modest. It will run quite happily on any PC that meets the minimum requirements of Windows itself. However, it is designed to make the best use of your PC's capabilities and a low-spec PC may struggle if you work with large files or if you wish to work with large diagrams displaying large numbers of pictures (especially if the pictures used are large).

The table below shows the recommended specification based on the size of file that you typically expect to work with, and the number of pictures in diagrams that you typically expect to work with. Bear in mind that you don't have to display pictures in diagrams if you don't want to.

Level Typical Files and Diagrams Recommended minimum PC configuration
Standard 0-2,000 records. Diagrams used typically display 0-20 pictures. Any PC that meet the minimum requirements for their version of Windows.
Large 2,000-25,000 records. Diagrams used typically display 20-50 pictures. 200Mhz CPU with 32Mb memory
Very Large 25,000-100,000 records. Diagrams used typically display 50-100 pictures. 500Mhz CPU with 128Mb memory
Huge 100,000+ records. Diagrams used typically display 100+ pictures. 1Ghz CPU with 256Mb memory
